I’ve already made a 100-song 80’s playlist from the Kathy’s playlist that you shared!!! There is just soooo much great music out there - HUGE part of my life! Thanks for going down the rabbit hole, Liz.

Oooh! I was at that HoJo concert w/Animotion! Except, I saw it on the other side of the country, at the very back of the Greek Theater in LA. My first concert was Big Country, and the first one I was allowed to drive to was Oingo Boingo at the Universal Amphitheater. My daughter has my same love for concerts, as one of the deciding factors on her college was that it is outside of LA (Scripps College), so she can still go see concerts (she bought tickets to see Boy Genius at the Hollywood Bowl before school even started!). I can't wait to check out Setlist.FM AND Kathy's playlist! Thanks for sharing!

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! And WOW do I have an amazing memory about Big Country. I never saw them live, but that one song shook up a whole teenage summer for me. Sigh.

Given that it was my first concert, I couldn't forget it! But I had thought it was at one venue, but found the correct one on Setlist.fm, thank you very much! ;-) My friend took 2 of us, and from what I found, she'd only had her license a few days. I can't believe my mom let her drive us from Pasadena into LA! But I guess she was more laidback than I am, since she let me drive my 3 friends to the Oingo Boingo concert (in LA as well) about 2 weeks after I got *my* license!

I’m a millennial but this playlist was epic. Psychedelic Furs in concert!! Pretty in Pink soundtrack was my high school soundtrack despite it being about 20 years later. We are seeing Air Supply for the second time in 3 weeks after previously seeing them in 2015 and some bands never get old. Heart in 2012 was also great!

BEST soundtrack. Holds up so beautifully, every single song. I'm laughing at Air Supply -- I recently made a joke about the whole yacht rock thing and I got schooled on how musically gifted they were. (Probably why it was one of the first albums I ever bought as a kid, ha) Glad you enjoyed Kathy's playlist!

Air Supply has the most perfect harmonies I’ve ever heard. And I loved them in high school, and Air Supply was one of the few bands we would listen to the entire album with my mom without skipping a single track when we drove across the country. When my husband sang me an Air Supply song I felt like I struck gold with him! (We met at karaoke).

Gen X London girl over here! 🙌 In her back garden sunbathing with zero factor sun oil, recording the Top 40 countdown to make a mix tape with and insist her best friend "listen to the words of this one" later, etc. etc. LOVED THIS SO MUCH, Liz! Two stories: I once snuck into the BBC recording once of Top Of The Pops with a friend and met Morton from AHA (with armbands!). And I went to the WHAM Club Tropicana tour concert at the Lyceum in London with Pamela Lewis, last minute when she had a spare ticket. Thank you so much for sharing all of this (and the playlist!). Oh yes, and Howard Jones!

Ahhh, meanwhile I wanted to be in the US (being in a John Hughes movie), so ... I came across the New Wave Social Club on Insta last night and thought of your essay - warning, you *might* be scrolling the reels for a while! https://www.instagram.com/reel/CxWHHH5N1zZ/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

I’ve been to tons of concerts. B 52’s, Beastie Boys, Bon Jovi, White Snake, Prince, Madonna, Pink, STP, and many more. The one I’ll always regret not attending was Nirvana while I was in college at FSU. He died not too long after. And of the many I’ve been to, I must say the Foo Fighters live was absolutely incredible! Highly recommend.

I would love to see them live. I'm sorry I missed them with Taylor.

Seeing Taylor was such a gift. He sang a few songs and was amazing. He covered Queen impeccably. The entire show was amazing and I had VIP free seats so we had the best time!!

"Music Liz" is on fire! Sounds like someone is angling for a guest spot on EONS. Whaddaya say? Wanna pitch us an album? Anything you want. Any time. Any era. As long as we haven't covered it yet.

Separate, but related. I'm pretty sure I saw Cliffs of Dooneen sometime in my past. Those FNX shows were amazing.

This is such a fun piece!! I will definitely be grabbing these 80s playlists. I love concert memories. I probably connect with people over music more than anything else. My first "big" concerts were the summer of 1984 when I was 14 - Garden State Arts Center saw INXS open for the Go-Go's, then a few weeks later, saw my first (of 17 through the years) Bruce Springsteen concert at the old Brendan Byrne Arena in NJ.

My love of music spans across all years and all genres. I've seen Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Madonna, Barry Manilow, Grateful Dead, Khalid, Metallica, Rush, Tool, U2, Justin Timberlake and everything in between. 😂

Thanks D! I'm with you on range -- a great show is a great show, even if you don't know all the songs. Then again, knowing all the songs is kind of awesome (looking at you, The Cure, circa 1986!)

Nah. We're 5% knowledge and 95% emotion. You just have to care about what you're pitching, that's all. The invitation is open.

I have the ticket stub for every concert I've been to, the first being the Born in the USA tour. The artist I've seen the most: Elvis Costello. I'd have to dig through the stubs to find out how many times, but it's a lot.
