It seems to me to be a combination of mental health and guns. It’s obvious that a significant percentage of the US population has issues with mental health. Hell, there are several in my immediate family that would qualify as such. However, those who combine ill mental health with conservatism, racism, misogyny, narcissism, ignorance and on and on…with the ready availability of handguns, rifles, shotguns and semiautomatic weapons spell a recipe for the continued crisis we find ourselves in these days.
I think that President and the Senate should put forth a bill banning the not just the sale, but the possession of semiautomatic weapons by those not in law enforcement. Make the Republicans vote against it. Perhaps there are 8 or 10 courageous Republican Congress members who will have finally had enough of the killing of innocents to vote in favor the bill.
Yes, for those who want to say it's not the guns, it's the people, and go further to scapegoat people with mental illness (even though they are statistically more likely to be *victims* of violence than perpetrators): If you think the problem is the people, why do you want to give more guns to the people??? To the point that you, as you point out, not only vote against mental health measures, but vote against red flag laws, waiting periods, keeping guns out of the hands of domestic abusers, etc. etc. It doesn't make sense and never made sense, and it is simply unconscionable.
